What’s involved in donating sperm?
There are roughly 4 stages to becoming a sperm donor. These involve getting a health check, discussing your decision with a qualified donor counsellor, signing some consents and preparing your samples. A more specific breakdown of the stages is below:
Stage 1 – Auditions (screening & assessment)
- Arrange a time to donate an initial sample (abstain 3-5 days before)
- Get the results of your semen analysis back in a few days
Stage 2 – Healthy & happy
Providing your semen analysis is normal we will go into stage 2 where you will:
- Have an appointment with the doctor
- Have an initial mediacal and physical check-up
- Get blood and urine tests including an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) screen
- Arrange an educational session with our qualified donor counsellor
Stage 3 – The tick of approval
Providing your medical checks are all normal we will go into stage 3 where you will:
- Have an initial educational session (with your partner if applicable)
- Have a 2nd medical conult to review your blood tests
- Sign consent forms and lifestyle declarations
- Have some tests for cystic fibrosis and a genetic screen
Stage 4 – The deep freeze (quarantine)
Depending on the outcome of the educational sessions, tests and screens you will:
- Produce a number of samples
- Have your sample donations Cryogenically preserved for a 6 month quarantine period
- Have blood screens to clear frozen samples for donor use for 5 families
